About

Hi! Welcome! I'm glad you're here.

Products are dyed by hand in small batches in Vancouver, BC, Canada, the unceded territory of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh peoples.

Lots of things are one-of-a-kind, so if you see something you like, grab it!

About the dyeing process:

Wherever possible, I use low-impact methods and materials, and use deadstock, organic, and ethically sourced items where I am able.

Low-impact processes use non-toxic chemicals to achieve the desired colours and effects, and produce waste that is considered environmentally safe for release. Fibre-reactive dye is non-toxic, safe, and eco friendly, using low water temperatures and only salt, soda ash, and sometimes sodium alginate.

I don't use bleach, heavy-metal mordants, toxic detergents or dyes.

I'm focusing on reducing the amount of water I use by developing techniques that use less, and batching items for washing and rinsing.

About me:

I am the ultimate fibre arts dilettante. I knit, crochet, make rugs, sew (like both my arms are broken), embroider, but ultimately, dyeing lit my head on fire and is my favourite of the bunch.

For my day job, I do marketing and communications, mostly for artists and performing arts companies. (Want to reach me about that? Visit hiemma.ca.)

Dyeing is amazing, because instead of living in my own head, I get to use my hands in concert with my brain to make something unusual, beautiful, and useful.

Special thanks:
